Tries galore at the coast

Coastal rugby fans were treated to an avalanche of 35 tries scored in three Namibian Rugby Union (NRU) matches played at the coast.

There was no love lost between Sparta United I in their 75-19 victory over Sparta United II during an entertaining NRU First League match played at the Sparta Recreational Club grounds in Walvis Bay. Kudus III also managed to snatch a 33-31 victory against Northern Force at Jan Wilken Stadium while a visiting Unam ladies team defeated Sparta ladies with 60-17.

Experienced proved to be the decisive factor in the match between Sparta I and Sparta II. Sparta I scored nine tries and six conversions against the three tries and two conversions managed by Sparta II. The Sparta I pack laid a solid foundation up front and ensured that the defending NRU First League champions raced into a 43-0 lead at halftime.

Sparta I added another try and conversion after the break (50-0) before Sparta II hot back with two tries and a conversion (50-12). Sparta I added another converted try (57-12). Sparta II however had the final say by scoring their third try and a conversion (57-19) in the dying moments of the game.

The Sparta I try scorers were right wing and captain Faven Visagie, inside centre Karl Pierre van Zyl (2), left wing Jennery Xamseb, fly-half Niel Grimbeek, Scrum-half Harry Basson, lock Gregory Coetzee and hooker Theo Coetzee (2). Visagie also added five conversions and replacement Manuel Daniels one conversion. The Sparta II try scorers were lock Jiwano Pietersen, replacements Jaco Barnard and Lionel Coetzee. Fly-half Brownwyn Styger added two conversions.

Sparta Ladies vs Unam

Unam scored 10 tries and five conversions against the three tries and 1 conversion recorded by Sparta. Sparta stunned the visiting students with an early try by fly-half Marchandy Hendricks. Inside centre Bianca Manuel added the conversion.

Scrum-half Ndapanda Kakundi were however on fire and stole the show for Unam with five tries. The other try scorers for Unam were Fly-half Kayla Ann Tjombe (2), Blindside flanker Klaudia Josef, lock Elzane-Lee Basson. Prop Mandy Hansen also scored a try and added five conversions.

Lady Laksmann stemmed the avalanche of tries by rounding off a brilliant with a try for Sparta. Scrum-half Robyn Andrews also visited the touch line for Sparta.

Kudus III vs Northern Force

Outside centre Algirnon Kolz, scrum-half Lovelle Delie, openside flanker Zander Jansen and replacement Cameron Stevens (2) scored for Kudus III. Inside centre Ulratio Lawrence converted four tries. Northern Force were awarded a penalty try. Scrum- half Jerome Beukes, inside centre Sylvano Beukes, eigth man Rayden Germishuys and prop Bennie Garab replied with tries for Northren Force.
