SWAPO se komitee vir vrouebelange het Saterdagoggend ’n mylpaal gevier: Vyftien vroue van die Erongostreek sal onder die vaandel van die party deelneem aan die komende streeksraad en plaaslike verkiesings.

Penny Martin, die huidige adjunkburgemeester van Walvisbaai en ’n kandidaat in die verkiesings vir die Erongostreeksraad, sê hierdie gebeurtenis is ’n duidelike teken van die opheffing van vroue in die land.

“Ek dink hierdie is ’n baie belangrike mylpaal in die stryd vir geslagsgelykheid. Vroue is die moeders van konings en presidente. Wanneer jy ’n vrou ophef, bemagtig jy die hele gesin,” sê sy.

By die vieringsgeleentheid het die adjunksekretaris van die komitee, Fransina Kahungu, die kandidate ernstig gemaan oor die rol wat hulle moet vervul sou hulle gekies word.

“Onthou dat julle die party verteenwoordig wanneer julle in die posisie dien waarvoor die mense julle gekies het. Moet dit nie doen om ryk te word nie, moet geld nie eerste stel nie. Dien met die doel om jou mense te bedien,” het sy gesê.

Kahunge het kandidate ook gewaarsku om nie leë beloftes te maak om kiesers in hul guns te laat stem nie en het hulle aangemoedig om daad by word te sit sou hulle verkies word.

“Moet nie in jou verkiesingsveldtog dinge sê wat jy nie bedoel nie. Belowe net dinge wat wel gedoen kan word en moet nie hierdie beloftes vergeet wanneer jy gekies word nie.”

Die adjunksekretaris het ook sterk uitgevaar teenoor korrupsie.

“Daar was al talle persone wat die party se naam in die skande gesteek het weens hul eie gierigheid. Moet nie dink jy kan nou jou land kry om ’n huis te bou nie; inteendeel moet diegene wat verkies word ander persone voor hulself stel en dien. Wees eerlik in al jou transaksies,” het sy afgesluit.
