Min het Rudie Swartz geweet wat hy en ‘n vriend uit die water sou haal toe hulle Vrydag by Langstrand vir haaie gaan hengel het.

In plaas daarvan om sy vangs met lyn, hoek en aas uit te trek, het Rudie en Werner van Riet wat vermoedelik ‘n kortbek-speervis of witmarlyn is met hul kaal hande uit die water gehaal.

“Ek het aanvanklik gedink dit is 'n haai en toe ‘n groot stuk aas na dit gegooi,” vertel Rudie.

“Die vis het in sirkels in vlak water geswem en toe ek sien dat dit die aas ignoreer, het ek besluit om ondersoek in te stel.”

Tot sy verbasing ontdek Rudie toe dit is nie 'n haai nie.

“Dit was 'n baie vreemde vis met 'n spiesagtige uitsteeksel aan die voorkant van sy kop. Ons het in die water gespring, die vis met ons kaal hande gevang en na die wal getrek. Ek het al 'n paar lekker groot visse gevang, maar niks van die aard en nog nooit op so ‘n manier nie.”

Die hele episode met die spartelende vis is verfilm en het op sosiale media beland.

Volgens Rudie, wat al vir langer as 35 jaar 'n ywerige hengelaar is, was die vis erg beseer en het verskeie vishoeke in sy maag gehad.

“Ek dink iets soortgelyks het met die tuna gebeur wat hengelaars in Sandvishawe opgemerk het. Die het 'n dag daarna dood uitgespoel.”

Die Namibiese Dolfynprojek het Rudie gevra om 'n stuk van sy vangs se rugvin en 'n stuk vleis van die vis aan hulle te voorsien sodat toetse die spesie kan bepaal.

Rudie het sy skaars vangs gevries voordat hy dit gaan opgesny en braai.

“Ek weet hoe die vis smaak, want ek het dit voorheen in Richardsbaai, Suid-Afrika geproe. Dit bied 'n uitsonderlike en smaaklike eetervaring en jy kry dit selde op die rakke in ons winkels,” sê hy.

Leon Krause, eienaar van ‘n hengelwinkel op Hentiesbaai, sê hengelaars sal alles gee vir 'n vangs soos die.

“Dit is selde dat so ‘n vis in ons waters gevind word en die vangs is beslis ‘n droom vir elke hengelaar. Die manier waarop hy dit gedoen het, is ook uitsonderlik.”
