Die feesseisoen het amptelik afgeskop met die aanskakel van Kersliggies op Walvisbaai.

Oud en jonk het Sondag tydens die Dag van Eenheid op die grasperk oor die Walvisbaai-munisipaliteit die feestyd amptelik verwelkom.

Dié geleentheid word jaarliks deur die burgermeester georganiseer en vanjaar het vader Kersfees in ’n brandweerwa opgedaag, tot groot vreugde van die kleintjies.

Voordat die Kersliggies aanskakel is, is daar Kers- en aanbiddingsliedjies gesing.

Die junior onderburgemeester, Jacky Geirises, het versoek dat almal versigtig en waaksaam moet wees, veral hierdie tyd van die jaar.

“Die paaie is gewoonlik baie besig gedurende die feestyd. Ons moet dronkbestuur vermy. Dit is die hoofoorsaak van ongelukke.”

Sy het benadruk dat die hoofdoel van die junior raad is om 'n stem vir die jeug te wees, asook om op te staan vir die jeug en hulle aan te moedig om beter weergawes van hulself te wees. “Ongelukkig is daar faktore soos dwelmmisbruik en alkoholverbruik wat die jeug verhinder om hul volle potensiaal te bereik. Dit kan ook nie gedoen word met kroeë en winkels wat steeds alkohol aan minderjarige kinders verkoop nie.”

Geirises het gesê dat tieners geneig is om hulle tot buitelandse rolmodelle, veral sangers en televisiesterre, te wend.

“Ouers kan egter tuis die perfekte rolmodel vir hul kinders wees. Dit kan gedoen word deur bloot na hul idees te luister en kinders te help om hul drome en doelwitte te bereik.”

Sy het ook almal versoek om dankbaar te wees en dit te betoon deur meer te gee, asook om te verseker dat die gees van eenheid te alle tye seëvier.

Die kinders wat die geleentheid bygewoon het, het ’n lekkerpakkie ontvang. Met die aanskakeling van die Kersliggies het almal saam “Feliz Navidad” gesing en gedans.
