The Tunacor Group confirmed that a crew member on board one of their vessels passed away on Tuesday.
Tunacor’s CEO, Peya Hitula, said that the man (47) was on board their vessel, Tunga.
“He passed away while the vessel was steaming to port seeking medical attention for the crew member.”
He added that the crew member displayed a health condition on 8 February that deteriorated quickly despite efforts on board and under medical advice, to assist him.
Hitula said that the vessel was working around 42 hours from the nearest port at the time, and the vessel was still 24 hours from port at the time of his passing.
“The company has been in constant communication with his relatives as well as with the relevant authorities. We will await the forensic report with regards to the cause of his death.
“We humbly request respect for the family and fellow crew, and to not speculate until the medical report is provided. We convey our deepest sympathies to his family.”
The CEO stated that the crew will be provided with professional counselling.
“All established medical protocols are being followed in full cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Social Services.”
