Die rustighied van Swakopmunders is met ’n harde slag van klinkende metaal verpletter toe ’n trein met vier lokomotiewe en waens om 13:30. ontspoor het.

Volgens noodpersoneel op die toneel, was vier mense by die ongeluk betrokke waarvan een oorlede is.

Aansienlike skade is ook aangerig en trein operasies na en vanaf Walvisbaai is vir eers ontwrig.

Nooddienste het gesukkel om die oorledene se liggaam wat vasgevang was in een van die ontspoorde lokomotiewe, te verwyder.

“Die loko[motief] lê op sy kop. Dit moet eers gelig word voor ons hom kan verwyder,” het mnr. Adri Goosen, hoof van die Swakopmund brandweer verduidelik.

Volgens Goosen was dit ’n weghol trein en hy is van mening dat spoed die die oorsaak is van die tragedie. “Daar was vier mense op die trein. Twee het afgespring en twee het op die trein gebly. Van die twee wat op die trein gebly het, is een beseer en die ander oorlede,” het hy bevestig.

’n Derde persoon word vir skok behandel.

Gerugte dat die trein se brieke nie op standaard was nie, kon nie bevestig word nie.

Lede van nooddienste op die toneel het bevestig dat die trein ’n vrag steenkool gedra het wat vir die uitvoermark bestem is.
Daar was ook vier leë swaelsuur tenkers.

TransNamib het in ’n verklaring bevestig dat die maatskappy se noodprotokol geïnisieer is ná die ongeluk. „TransNamib betreur hierdie voorval en sal beskikbare bronne ten volle gebruik om ondersoek in te stel.”

Die goewerneur van die Erongostreek, mnr. Neville Andre, het die ongeluk as ’n tragedie beskryf en inwoners gevra om van die toneel weg te bly sodat dit ongehinderd opgeruim kan word.

“Hopenlik sal TransNamib ons laat weet sodat sulke situasies in die toekoms vermy en verhoed kan word. Ons innige meegevoel met die familie van die oorledene.”

Ongeluk wat wag om te gebeur

Me. Ciske Howard, voorsitter van die Erongo-streeksraad, was op die toneel en is van mening die streek verwag dat só ’n ongeluk sou gebeur.

“Die treine maak hier ’n skerp draai. Ons het dit al lank voor oë om die treine buite die dorp te laat verbygaan. Indien ’n trein met ’n plofbare of vlambare vrag ontspoor, kan dit ’n yslike ramp wees. Die spoorlyn is te na aan die dorp. Daar is geboue regoor die straat,” sê sy.

Volgens Howard moet daar dringend ingegryp word.

“Ons as die streeksbestuur gaan saam met TransNamib en die dorpsbestuur moet vergader om ’n alternatief te vind.”

Mnr. Chris Priilaid werk by ’n maatskappy regoor die ongelukstoneel en stem met Howard saam dat die einste draai ’n probleem is vir treine.

“Ons het in die kombuis gesit tydens ons middagete en ’n yslike slag gehoor wat soos donderweer geklink het. Ons het uitgegaan en gesien hoe die trein lê,” sê hy.

Priilaid sê dat hy deur kennisse verneem het dat die trein teen ’n vinnge spoed by ’n vulstasie in die buitewyke van Swakopmund verbygerol het.
