Besoekers verloor al hulle besittings

Vier en dertig toeriste se Namibiese besoek is kortgeknip ná hul “Rotel”-bus aan die brand geslaan het.

Die bus het gister (Vrydag) op die C14 in die Kuiseb Canyon-omgewing aan die brand geslaan. Al die insittendes het ongedeurd daarvan afgekom.

Mnr. Peter Hess, wat die bus bestuur het, het gesê die oorsaak van die brand is onbekend. Hy meen dit kon moontlik die remme links agter gewees het wat die brand veroorsaak het.

Die toergids, mnr.Roland Kordy, het gesê hulle het alles in hul vermoë gedoen om die vlamme te blus met die twee brandblussers aanboord, maar helaas kon hulle en die toeriste net terugstaan en toekyk hoe die vlamme die hotelbus verswelg.

“Die brandblussers was nie genoeg nie. Ná 10 minute was daar nie meer ’n bus nie,” het ’n geskokte Kordy gese.

Al 34 besoekers asook Hess en Kordy het lewendig uitgekom, maar is hulle al hul besittings kwyt.
Kordy skat dat omtrent helfte van die reisigers hul passpoorte in die vlamme verloor het. “Hulle het al hulle besittings wat op die bus was, verloor.”

Die toeriste is egter vinning by Hotel Zum Kaizer op Swakopmund vir die aand tuisgemaak voor hulle teen 09:00 Saterdag ’n toer met Charly’s Desert Tours onderneem het. Hulle vertrek Sondag na Windhoek en gaan by die Duitse ambassade nuwe noodreisdokumente ontvang.

Die toer sou tot Saterdag, 16 November, geduur het maar die brand het dié planne kortgenip.
Kordy sê die groep sou in die komende week na Spitzkoppe reis en Etosha besoek voor hulle na Windhoek sou terugkeer van waar hulle na Europa sou terug vertrek.

“Dit was vir ons baie stresvol. Ek ly steeds aan skok,” het Kordy die oggend ná die voorval gesê, “maar ons sal probeer om ons toeriste sover as moontlik te akkomodeer.”

Die Rolling “Rotel” Hotel is anders as enige toerbus.

Dit is eindelik ‘n mobiele hotel. Die voertuie word in hul oorsprongstaal as Das Rollende Hotels genoem, en word besit deur die Duitse maatskappy Rotel Tours, 'n 55 jaar oue onderneming wat, met 'n kontingent van 60 toergidse, landvaarte deur Europa, Afrika, Noord-Amerika en verder bedryf.

Die voorste helfte van die voertuig lyk baie soos enige ander toerbus, maar die agterste helfte is 'n heel ander storie. Die sleepwaentjie word bedags (onbewoon) agter 'n gewone motorbus getrek.
Snags word die (buitengewoon lang) tuig by 'n hotel geparkeer. Daar is sowat 26 aparte slaapkamers van ses tot drie voet. Die toeriste verkry toegang tot hulle slaap plekke met lere aan die passasierskant.

Daar is ook 'n toilet aan boord vir gebruik tussen die stilhouplekke, maar badkamergeriewe word voorsien by stopplekke langs die pad of in die oornag-parke en kampeerterreine.
Die toerleier huur gewoontlik een of twee vertrekke sodat die groep beurte kan maak om te stort.
