The many, many joys of pizza

26 November 2019 | Supplements

It all started with a tiny pizza oven and a desire to make people happy by filling their tummies with delicious food.

Just over ten years later Innes and Inga Potgieter, who began their restaurant journey in December 2009 as Secret Garden Bistro, have expanded phenomenally.

They not only upgraded the pizza oven, but also took the next step of their journey by opening INspired Pizza on 1 August.

According to the restaurant’s co-owner Inga Potgieter, INspired Pizza is a blend of Innes’ enthusiasm and perfectionism for pizza, and Inga’s passion for making great food and meeting new people.

“We complement each other as easily as mozzarella cheese and basil, and that’s the balance you’ll find in our new restaurant INspired Pizza. We are still serving the good old favourites, which include Innes’ speciality pizzas and Inga’s innovative pasta dishes, butternut soup and malva pudding. We have added some new, exciting dishes and we hope you’ll come and enjoy them with us.”

The business is situated in the heart of Swakopmund, in the newly renovated Atrium Centre on Hendrik Witbooi Street.

INspired Pizza is open from 17:30 to 21:30 from Monday to Saturdays for dinner. They also offer lunch on Fridays and Saturdays between 12:00 and 14:00. The restaurant is normally not open on public holidays although they will be open on public holidays in December.

Staff members include a pizza chef assistant, a cook, an assistant cook, a waiter and an assistant waiter.

“They will go out of their way to fulfill the guests’ wishes and this is all done in a very friendly and efficient manner,” Potgieter said.

According to her, the husband and wife team are still inspired after 20 years of pizza making and hospitality.

Innes brings his years of experience and passion for pizza making and Inga creates a relaxed and classy atmosphere at INspired Pizza.

“We offer thin-based pizzas made by hand and baked in our custom-built wood-fired pizza oven. Choose from a variety of toppings and then watch your pizza being freshly prepared and crisping to perfection,” said Potgieter.

The most popular pizzas at INspired Pizzas include the Innes’ Special, the Namib Sun and the Popeye.

The ingredients for the Innes’ Special are a tomato base with anchovy, onions, garlic, peppadew, cheddar, topped with bacon.

The Namib Sun consists of an olive oil base with pepperoni sausage, jalapeños, pickled onions, olives and garlic. The Popeye has a tomato base with spinach, feta, olives and fresh tomatoes.

INspired Pizza can be followed on Facebook at facebook.com/inspiredpizzaswakop and on Instagram at @inspiredpizza for their weekly specials.

“We are currently have a lunch special. This is a margherita pizza for one, with a small Coke, Sprite or Fanta for only N$45, plus calzone (folded pizza) with a creamy chicken and mushroom filling for only N$75.

“Watch this space for more specials to come during December.”
