Stadion se hekke bly toe

Die koms van fase 3-inperkings sou beteken dat atlete weer hul sport kon beoefen, maar atlete word egter steeds toegang tot die Vineta-stadion op Swakopmund geweier.

Hoogspringafrigter Hennie Horn sê dat goedkeuring van Atletiek Namibië ontvang is wat die heropening van sportfasiliteite ondersteun.

Hy voeg by dat hy bereid is om te verseker dat alle sanitasieriglyne en gesondheidsmaatreëls gevolg word. Tog, ten spyte daarvan, word hy steeds verbied om atlete by die stadion af te rig.

“’n Boodskap van Atletiek Namibië op 3 Junie het atlete vir ’n week se geduld gevra om die sanitering van stadions toe te laat, maar meer as ’n maand later is daar geen teken hiervan nie,” het Horn aangevoer.

Erwin Naimoka, die president van Atletiek Namibië, sê die liggaam wil homself nie ’n vyand of ’n oorlas maak nie.

“Ons wil regulasies volg en respkteer wat deur die regering bepaal het. Natuurlik wil ons die beste vir ons atlete hê, maar hul gesondheid is vir ons nou tydens die pandemie belangriker.”

In eie hande neem

Horn sê hy het dieselfde roete as baie skole geneem om sy atlete fiks te hou tydens die inperking, maar voeg by dat dit nie eintlik werk nie.

“Ek leer my atlete vier dae ’n week tegniek. Dit is iets wat ingeoefen moet word,” sê hy.

Hy sê voorts dat toegang tot sporttoerusting ook vir sy jong atlete ’n uitdaging is.

“Ons kan nie verwag dat ’n hoogspringer op sy ma se matrasse moet oefen nie. Ons naellopers het dit bietjie makliker, want hulle kan nog gaan draf. Maar, vir ’n atleet wat aan ’n tartanbaan gewoond is wat nou op plafeisel of teer moet hardloop, kan tot talle mediese komplikasies lei.”

Éen so ’n komplikasie is ‘shin splints’, of mediale tibiale stresindroom. Hierdie toestand word veroorsaak deur spanning op die skeenbeen en bindweefsel wat spiere en been heg. Bindweefsel kan ontsteek en ’n atleet groot pyn veroorsaak.

Horn sê die kommer oor sy atlete se fiksheid en gesondheid hom genoop het om sy eie baan in te rig. “Dit gaan my tien duisende kos, maar dit is eenvoudig iets wat ek bereid is om te doen,” sê hy.

Inperkingskopseer

Hoewel die Swakopmund munisipaliteit die Vineta-stadion verhuur, is die ministerie van sport, jeug en nasionale dienste daarvoor verantwoordelik.

Selma Siwombe, die sport beampte op Swakopmund, sê die sanitering van die fasiliteit in lyn sou val met ’n inisiatief in al die ander streke om sportsfasiliteite vir atlete toegangklik te maak. Spanne wat hierdie taak moes uitvoer is egter by grensposte vasgevang.

“Hulle (die ministerie) is seker besig om werk daarvan te maak, maar ek kan nie sê nie. Ek het nog geen amptelike woord daaroor ontvang nie.”
