Smith se besoek bevorder toerisme

Hollywood ster “baie vriendelik”

Die Swakopmund lughawe het vanmiddag namens Namibië faarwel gebied aan Amerikaanse akteur Will Smith, na hy 10 dae in die land spandeer het vir die verfilming van Disney+ Dokureeks, One Strange Rock.

One Strange Rock se tweede seisoen word verwag om in Maart vanjaar sy debuut te maak en vertel van die aarde vanuit die oogpunt van ruimtemanne en -vroue soos Chris Hadfield, Nicole Stott en Jeff Hoffmann.

Erasmus De Jager is een gelukkige Namibiër wat die Fresh Prince of Bel-Air akteur raakgeloop het.

De Jager het na sy ontmoeting met die akteur by die Swakopmund lughawe beweer dat hy “baie vriendelik” is.

Buiten die glimlagte wat Smith met sy vriendelikheid op Namibiërs se gesigte geverf het, hou sy besoek langtermyn nagevolge vir Namibië in.

Volgens Romeo Muyunda, die spreekbuitel vir die ministerie van omgewing en toerisme gee Smith se besoek aan die toerismebedryf ‘n hupstoot.

“Die besoek van ‘n Hollywood stêr gaan status aan ons land bring en persone wat voorheen nie geweet het van Namibië nie sal nou weet. As gevolg daarvan sal ons belangstelling lok as ‘n toeristebestemming.”

Dit beklemtoon die beeldskone natuur waarvoor Namibië ‘n wêreldwye reputasie verdien het.

“Die feit dat Smith ‘n omgewingsgesentreerde dokumentêr hier verfilm beteken dat ons omgewingsbewaring en dierelewe sal vertoon word. Dit bewys dat ons die regte dinge doen in terme van omgewingsbewaring en dierebeskerming. As ‘n land moet ons trots wees en bou op sulke prestasies,” sê hy.

Die toerismebedryf struikel sedert die aankondiging van die noodtoestand as gevolg van die Covid-19 pandemie, maar Muyunda meen Smith se besoek gee vir hulle ‘n goeie reputasie.

“Hierdie gaan ons land vertoon as ‘n veilige toeristebestemming met effektiewe voorkomingsmaatreëls. Toerisme is ‘n kompeterende bedryf wêreldwyd, maar onlangs het veiligheid een van die belangrikste faktore geword. Om vir Will Smith veilig hier te bevestig dat ons protokol veilig is.”
