“Een van die vele uitdagings waarvoor ek te staan gekom het, was dat ouers nie hul kinders betyds by die skool ingeskryf het nie. Hulle stroom gewoonlik op die nippertjie kantoor toe met die hoop om ’n plek vir hul kind te kry,” het me. Monica Gawises, oud-onderwysinspekteur vir die Walvisbaai-kring, gesê.

Gawises, wat op 30 Junie 2021 uit haar pos as inspekteur getree het, sê dat Walvisbaai drie volwaardige laerskole en twee hoërskole benodig om die groeiende toeloop van leerders na die hawedorp te huisves.

“Die tekort aan klaskamers en oorvol klasse was nog altyd ’n uitdaging.”

Vroeër vanjaar het 263 graad 1-leerders nie plek op skool gekry nie, met meer as 400 leerders wat aanvanklik plek in Walvisbaai gesoek het.

Gawises het gesê die streek begin hierdie maand met die inskrywing vir graad 1-leerders.

“Op 27 Julie begin inskrywings vir graad 1s; op 28 Julie vir pre-primêre leerders; en 29 Julie vir graad 8s. Ek doen ’n beroep op ouers om hul kinders asseblief betyds in te skryf.”

Totsiens

Na 40 jaar in die onderwys, neem Gawises van die sektor afskeid ná sy in Junie 60 geword het.

Sy het haar loopbaan as onderwyseres aan die Elifas #Goseb-skool op Usakos begin, waar sy Engels vir graad 5, 6 en 7 gegee het.

In 1996 begin sy klas gee by die Laerskool Erongosig op Usakos.

Teen 2002 het sy haarself tot só ’n mate bewys dat sy aangestel is as die skoolhoof van die Laerskool Erongosig en neem sy vir die volgende tien jaar daar die leiding.

Sy sluit in 2012 by die Walvisbaai-onderwyskantoor aan.

Gawises sê dat sy die land en sy volk na die beste van haar vermoë deur die onderwyssektor gedien het.

“Ek voel soos ’n oorwinnaar. Ek het die meeste van my doelwitte as inspekteur bereik, alleenlik deur God se genade. Ek was geseën met wonderlike personeellede, veral skoolhoofde, wat pro-aktiewe, hardwerkende en toegewyde individue is. ”
Sy gaan vir die res van die jaar nog in Walvisbaai wees totdat sy later banjaar by haar man op hul plaas aansluit. “In die volgende paar jaar sal ek ’n boervrou wees,” het sy gesê.

Steunpilaar

Afgesien van die baie uitdagings, het Gawises talle hoogtepunte tydens haar ampstermyn as inspekteur bereik.

“Drie skole is tydens my ampstermyn geopen, naamlik die laerskole High Hope en Seaside asook die Hoërskool Tutaleni. Ek het ook eie inisiatief geneem en Namport genader wat ons met vier klaskamers by Seaside gehelp het om meer kinders gedurende normale skoolure te huisves.”

Sy vertel met trots en is vas daarvan oortuig dat sy die eerste skoolhoof is wat ’n Namibiese president genooi het vir ’n prysuitdeling.

“Oud-president Hifikepunye Pohamba het Laerskool Erongosig besoek vir ons jaarlikse prysuitdeling toe ek skoolhoof daar was.”

Gawises het uitgewys dat mnr. Joseph Martin, wat die afgelope sewe jaar deel was van haar kantoor, as waarnemende inspekteur vir Walvisbaai sal optree.

“Die vakature is geadverteer en sal binnekort gevul word.”

Versoek

Sy het die gemeenskap gemaan om in hierdie tyd veilig te bly.

“Ek wil ouers vra om na hul kinders om te sien. Nie alle kinders is akademies aangelê nie, sommige is goed met hul hande. Ouers, ondersteun asseblief u kinders.”

Sy het haar dank betuig teenoor God en haar wyle baas, mnr. John Awaseb, haar huidige baas me. Enfriede Stephanus, en die streekbestuurspan, die skoolhoofde, haar personeellede, die ouers en die hele gemeenskap van Walvisbaai.

Mnr. Jonathan Mashawu, skoolhoof van Kuisebmond Sekondêre Skool vertel dat Gawises verdien om trots te wees op die leiersrol wat sy as die eerste inspektrise van Walvisbaai die gespeel het.

“Sy het ’n bedeidende rol gespeel deur samewerkingsinisiatiewe tussen onderwysers, leerders en ouers van die Walvisbaai-gemeenskap aan te moedig en te ondersteun ten einde te verseker dat die leuse van die streek gehandhaaf en nagekom word. Vandag is die streek bekend vir sy uitnemende opvoedkunde en buitengewone diens. Mag sy ’n gesonde en gelukkige lewe saam met vriende en familie geniet.”
