Celebrating reintegration

The 2nd of November will see a flurry of activities taking place to celebrate the reintegration of Walvis Bay into Namibia.

At the time Namibia gained independence in 1990, Walvis Bay and the offshore islands were still under South African rule. After lengthy negotiations and discussions, Walvis Bay and the offshore islands were integrated into Namibia on 1 March 1994.

Jimmy Julie, one of the organisers, said that the celebrations will kick off with a march lead by the Namibian Navy. “The march will start at the Fire Station in Kuisebmond and finish at Kuisebmond Stadium, where the festivities will take place.”

Thereafter follows an address by Judge Petrus Damaseb, who was one of the negotiators involved in the process of reintegrating Walvis Bay. The keynote speaker is Vice President Nangolo Mbumba.

“After the formalities, a music show takes place where award winning artists like Sally Boss Madam, Top Cheri and Walvis Bay-born singer Pule perform”.

The Oceana Group of Companies is the main sponsor for the celebrations, contributing N$300 000.

Dr Martha Uumati, managing director of Erongo Marine Enterprises, a subsidiary of Oceana, said that the history and success of Walvis Bay is interlinked with the history and success of the Oceana Group of Companies.

“Soon after Walvis Bay gained its freedom, Erongo Marine Enterprises was born as a young horse mackerel company with limited export markets. Since then Erongo Marine Enterprises has grown into a proudly Namibian fishing company and leading employer in the horse mackerel sector.”

Uumati said the sponsorship is a way to express their gratitude towards what the town of Walvis Bay has done for the company.

“I’d love to see more companies come on board to truly celebrate Walvis Bay in its entirety.”
