The dog kennels, which were constructed by Namport more than 10 years ago, had reached their lifespan due to the weather conditions at the harbour town.
Immanuel Hango, Namport’s engineer: infrastructure maintenance, was at the helm of the project and said Namport saw the need to respond positively to the request for assistance from Nampol due to the important role played by the K9 dog unit throughout port operations.
“Having the dogs at the port are extremely useful in aiding the port authority’s cargo handling operations by detecting illegal substances such as explosives and even drugs that might enter the port via cargo received,” he said.
In 2011, Namport sponsored Nampol with a 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser valued at N$416 000. bringing the total investment of the Namibian Ports Authority towards Nampol to N$696 000.
