The minister of health and social services Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced 180 new Covid-19 cases, a record number of 659 recoveries and another two Covid-19 deaths.

Shangula said that the ministry received 1 907 results and that of the positive cases, 91 are male and 89 are female, with the youngest being 1-year-old and the oldest 73.

The confirmed cases are distributed as follows: Windhoek (99), Walvis Bay (23), Swakopmund (13), Usakos (1), Keetmanshoop (4), Karasburg (3), Lüderitz (3), Rehoboth (8), Mariental (1), Rundu (9), Okahandja (7), Otjiwarongo (1), Katima Mulilo (4), Gobabis (2), Oshakati (1) and Nankundu (1).

The minister explained that since 5 September 2020, 1 199 contacts were swabbed of which 434 (36%) tested positive.

“This represents 55% of the total confirmed cases recorded in the last five days. Of the 434 contacts who tested positive, 303 (69%) did not present any symptoms consistent with Covid-19. We urge the public to be extra cautions and that those who test positive, provide necessary information for effective contact tracing.”

The minister also announced 659 recoveries, most of which (545) were recorded in Khomas, followed by Erongo (59), Ohangwena (18), Hardap (12), Kavango East (11), Omusati (10) and Otjozondjupa (4).

Shangula said that of the active cases, 13 are in a serious to critical condition.

“One patient is seriously ill in the Erongo region, while four are critical. In the Khomas region, two patients are in a serious condition and six are critical.”

The minister also announced that two Covid-19 deaths were recorded in Windhoek and Keetmanshoop.

“The death reported in Windhoek involves a woman (76) who had multiple comorbidities. She died in hospital on 4 September, while a man (48) with known comorbidities died in hospital in Keetmanshoop on 8 September.”
