Bail was denied to Desmond Derrick Fick (61), who made his first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court today as the accused in an attempted rape and indecent assault case involving an 18-year-old woman.

Magistrate Paula Nelao Brown refused bail.

“This is based on the seriousness of the offence. Furthermore, it would not be in the interest of justice nor in public interest to have the accused released on bail,” prosecutor Cleopatra Boois who represented the state reasoned.

Boois added that there is also a real poss that the accused is aware of the residential addresses of key witnesses in the case.
“It is against this background that the state objects bail,” she said.

According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the alleged attempted rape and indecent assault took place between June and July this year at a house in Swakopmund.

“It is alleged that the suspect lured the victim to his house to prepare her for modelling job. He touched the breast of the complainant, kissed her and also touched her genital area. The accused allegedly tried to remove the panties of the accused without her consent. He also took pictures of the victim whilst she was naked under the pretext that she was doing a modelling job,” said Iikuyu.

Fick was represented by lawyer Ray Rukoro who told the court that his client would lodge a formal bail application.
“The reasons for bail are noted. We will make the arrangement to apply for bail,” said Rukoro.

The case has been postponed to 29 September to allow for further police investigations. The accused has been remanded in custody at the Swakopmund police holdings cells.
