The hope for a good rainy season continues to increase after the “small” rainy season arrived relatively early.

On the Facebook page “Reën in Namibia”, numerous residents shared their joy along with how much rain they received.
Based on their post, 93mm was recorded on Farm Hairabib near Grootfontein on Friday.

“We have just measured 73mm and it’s still raining,” the delighted farmer said on Thursday evening.

In Otjiwarongo, farmers claim to have measured 9mm, while in the Summerdown area 5.5mm was recorded. It rained significantly more at Gobabis (22mm).

On Friday it rained across the country again, with 25mm being recorded near Rehoboth, 11mm south of Gochas, 9mm near Schlip and 7mm each at Okahandja, Stampriet and Groendraai.

In Windhoek, residents measured between 1 and 4mm on Friday and 8mm over the weekend.

At Uis, 1mm was recorded, and along the coast where only a quick shower was recorded.

The SASSCAL weather network published the following rain reports for Saturday at various stations: Kalahari 20mm, Okahandja 11mm, Claratal 6mm, Windhoek 3.2mm, Tsumis 1.4mm and at the Gondwana Canyon Lodge 0.6mm.

Looking good

The prospects for the coming rainy season remain good, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicting a La Niña phenomenon for spring in southern Africa.

According to forecasts, the sea surface temperature in the central Pacific will be one degree Celsius lower than usual in November, December and January.

In the event of a La Niña, above-average rainfall can be expected in southern Africa. However, other natural weather factors also play a role and thus exacts cannot be predicted.

After the weekend, rain in Namibia is over for the time being, with one exception. According to the weather office, there may be light, isolated showers on Monday in the extreme southeast of the country, while in the rest of Namibia – including the coast – it should be partly cloudy and warm.
