Vaughn Powell; Winner; “It is extremely humbling.”

The Rap Battle Conversations took place at Fachwerk Beer Garden on Thursday evening, where five contestants participated in the competition that was judged by well-known musicians Savannah Collins, Livinge Dennis and Nicole Roos.

The competition, which was organised by established poet and rapper Scarlet Gray (real name - Melissa Müller), had participants rapping to a beat tied to a topic which the organiser provided to them on the spot.

The competition only had three rules: No swearing, no insulting an opponent, and no pausing for longer than five seconds.

After several rounds of rapping and the adjudication, Vaughn Powell emerged victorious.

“It is extremely humbling. There were a whole bunch of people and they were all there for the same reason: To create art and express themselves. I wouldn’t say winning was unexpected, but it was a welcome surprise,” he said.

He added that it is an amazing platform since it creates an opportunity for upcoming rappers to express themselves in a non-critical environment.

“It is a comfortable and expressive environment.”

He urged upcoming rappers to keep having fun while expressing themselves and to make sure they take part in the next event scheduled for May.

Powell managed to fend off stiff competition from his friend Kevin Ferreira, who had to settle for second place.

Kevin and Vaughn won a mentorship opportunity where they would be mentored by the three judges.

Another Swakopmund-based rapper, Ay4, took third place.

Judge Dennis said that although the rappers need to strengthen their ability in manipulating the microphone, their talent was impressive.

“What I particularly liked about the freestyling, was that there was flow. There is definitely potential.”

Dennis encouraged participants to keep attending the open mic events at Fachwerk Beer Garden as well as the next Rap Battle Conversation event.

“They should come and use the microphone and the stage to develop.”

Dennis is willing to offer mentorship, especially on microphone handling techniques.

The next instalment of Rap Battle Conversations take place in May on a Thursday at a venue and date that will be confirmed in due course.
