Most of the western regions and the Zambezi received little to no rain during October.

However, the Namibia Meteorological Service said it is still early days and projections remain favourable for the remainder of the season over most of the country.

According to the Namibia Rainfall Performance Bulletin for October, Eiseb in the Omaheke’s Otjombinde constituency received the highest rainfall during the month, recording 189 mm rain. This is the only place that recorded more than 100mm during October.

This is approximately 11 times more than the monthly average of 17mm, according to the bulletin.

Way above average

Meanwhile, the eastern parts of the Keetmanshoop Rural constituency received significant amounts of rainfall, with Koës and Aroab recording 65 mm for the month.

This is much more than towns’ monthly averages of 10mm and 7mm respectively.

The northern parts of Otjozondjupa also received good rainfall during October, ranging from 15mm to 45mm, which is above the monthly average, the report said.

Of the 91 places for which rainfall was recorded, 10 reported more than 100% above the normal rainfall for October, with Eiseb being the only place to record more than 1 000% above its normal rainfall.

Dam bulletin

In related news, the total average level of the country’s dams stands at 54.4%, while last season they were 24% full.

The dam bulletin indicated that the average level of the dams in the central area of Namibia is 66.8%, compared to last season’s 60.4%.

The average level of the dams in the Gobabis area is at 30.3%, while last season it was 41.6%, while in the south, the average level of the dams stands at 60.3%, compared to last season’s 20.2%.
