Die Amerikaanse ambassade in Namibië het ses Toyota Hilux bakkies vir die ministerie van gesondheid en maatskaplike dienste beskikbaar gestel.

Die voertuie is ’n geskatte N$3,2 miljoen werd en sluit aan by die ministerie se bestaande vloot van vier voertuie. Die aanvanklike vier voetuie is sedert 2016 al in die veld bedrywig.

Volgens die minister van gesondheid en maatskaplike dienste dr. Kalumbi Shangula, gaan die nuwe voertuie in die Hardap-, Kunene-, Omusati- en Omahekestreek gebruik word, waar dit “’n noodsaaklike rol speel in die versekering van gehalte gesondheidsorg”.

Shangula sê hierdie areas het ’n gebrek aan voltydse dokters.

Die Amerikaanse ambassadeur in Namibië Lisa Johnson stem volkome met hom saam.

“Daar is soveel klem op die streke met baie pasiënte, dat daar vergeet word van onderbediende streke,” het Johnson gesê.

Sy het verduidelik dat die voertuie gebruik sal word om spesifiek die MIV/vigs pandemie te bestry.

“Honderde Namibiërs sterf elke jaar weens MIV/vigs. Hierdie voertuie gaan gebruik word om mediese personeel te neem om mense op te lei oor MIV/vigs en hoe om die virus te behandel.”

Sy het ook met lof gepraat oor TLD, ’n nuwe anti-retrovirale behandeling wat minder newe effekte vir pasiënte het en nie maklik weerstand in pasiënte opbou nie.

“Dit is die beste wat daar is,” het Johnson gesê.

In 2017 het 250 000 Namibiërs MIV/vigs onder lede gehad.
