Danien van Niekerk; Organizer; “Santa Claus also came to visit …”
The two-day December Night Market concluded on Saturday at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre.
The market recorded an average attendance of 1 250 people, visiting stalls that sold food, beverages, arts, crafts, antique, clothes and Christmas goodies, while the kids were kept busy with jumping castles. There were also live performances by the African Vocals and George Longane.
The first Swakopmund Night Market took place in June. Organizer Danien van Niekerk said that this month’s Night Market was different, since it offered more live entertainment. “This time I organized a jam-packed schedule of live entertainers.”
Santa Claus also came to visit and children could take photos with him. “It was all about that festive experience. We wanted to make it something special that people can look forward to and that the whole family can come and enjoy,” Van Niekerk said.
She explained how the market was conceived.
“Originally it wasn’t my idea. The manager of the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre approached me and asked if I would like to take over her idea to host the Night Market in the hotel’s courtyard. I guess she approached me due to my experience in running markets. I took up her offer, telling her that I will give it a go and see how it would play out.”
One of the stalls present at the market was Pierre van der Westhuizen’s Bargain Corner.
“Although I have been at Bargain Corner for four years, many people come to my stall and ask me where my business is situated. This makes the Swakopmund Night Market a good advertising platform,” Van der Westhuizen said.
