The Cosdef Arts & Crafts Centre in Swakopmund offers a range of creative courses that are accredited by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA), namely Jewellery Design, Fashion Design, Visual Arts and Clothing Production.
Two other courses - Graphic Design and Leather Craft – are still in the process of gaining accreditation.
This year, classes will commence on 1 March followed by a week of induction. Currently, 40 students are enrolled, however the centre has space for up to 80 students and accommodates 10 to 15 students per course.
The duration of the various courses is a full year, starting in March and that run until the beginning of December. These courses are Level 2 with Jewellery Design and Clothing Production going up to Level 3.
In terms of price, the courses range from N$7 500 to N$13 000, which includes the registration fee and a starter kit, and course fees are payable per month.
According to Cosdef visual arts instructor Sem Amuthitu, people often believe that one needs to be born with a talent of arts to be good at it. “Yet you don’t have to be an artist to enrol in the programme, as everything will be taught.”
Cosdef’s marketing coordinator Jessica le Grange, says that the centre aims to teach students everything they need to know to start their own business. In light of this, all the courses are designed to include basic maths, English and entrepreneurship in a bid to teach students to become self-employed.
“We also offer incubation programs where students can start their own Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) at the centre for a year when we can assist them in their growing business,” she says.
She adds that all the long courses are also available as evening short courses and it is possible to accumulate credits to work towards a full qualification.
Cosdef is the national umbrella body for the Community Skills Development Centres (Cosdecs) and the Cosdef Arts and Crafts Centre. It is a registered trust, governed by a Board of Trustees that coordinates, supports and supervises the various Centres.
