Namibies-gebore Garth Prince wat deesdae in Kanada woon, het onlangs ’n kinderboek in sy aangenome land gepubliseer en volgens hom was dit ’n onmiddellike blitsverkoper.

“Toe ons die boek aanvaklik vir voorverkope beskikbaar gestel het, het ons blitsvinnig die U$10 000-kerf oortref. Maar die wisselkoers tussen die Amerikaanse en die Namibiese dollar is eenvoudig bo meeste Namibiërs se vuurmaakplek. Dit maak ongelukkig net nie vir ons sin om die boeke in Kanada te druk en na Afrika te vervoer nie. Namibiërs sal dit eenvoudig nie kan bekostig nie.”

Prince het egter dié uitdaging aangepak en nou kan die publiek op sy webtuiste donasies maak om boeke na Afrika te stuur. Só het dit gebeur dat die eerste vrag boeke Dinsdag na Kuisebmond Primêre Skool in Walvisbaai versend is.

Inspirasie

Die boek ‘Grazing Back Home’ is deur Ferdinand Hengombe, die voormalige leier van die Namib Marimbas, se oorspronklike liedjie met dieselfde titel geïnspireer. Prince vertel dat hy verlief geraak het op die liedjie toe hy die groep se vertolking daarvan hoor.

Die boek spog met die kunswerk van Jason Blower en die storie is geskryf deur Tololwa M Mollel. Daar gaan ook ’n CD met die boek gepaard.

Prince sê verteenwoordiging is vir hom belangrik.

“Ek was nog altyd ’n Namibiër en as ’n Namibiese kind het ek altyd gedink dat daar te min kinderboeke is wat die wêreld rondom my en mense wat soos ek lyk, uitbeeld,” sê hy.

Dit was egter eers toe Prince in 2019 teruggekeer het na Namibië met sy kinders, toe hy sy brein aan die konsep van identiteit uitgeleen het.

“Ek het my kinders Namibië toe gebring. Ek wou vir hulle wys wie ek is en waar ek vandaan kom en uiteraard, wie hulle is. Ek wil hê my kinders moet karakters ontmoet wat soos hulle lyk. As kinders karakters sien wat soos hulle lyk, besef hulle dat hulle ook kan presteer en dat hulle ook die hoofkarakter kan wees.”
