’n Halwe kabeljou aan die hoek

In baie gevalle is ’n halwe glo beter as niks, maar nie vir Chrisjan Potgieter nie.

Dié hengelaar het ’n eienaardige ondervindig gehad toe hy letterlik en figuurlik ’n halwe kabeljou uit die grootwaters getrek het.

Chrisjan (36) het ná hy verneem het van die kabeljou wat loop (soos die vissermanne mos sê) by Myl 72, besluit om vir homself ook iets vir die pan te gaan soek. Die teenwoordigheid van ’n bronshaai op soek na prooi in die einste ongewing waar Chrisjan besluit het om sy lyn te gaan nat maak, het egter vir ’n unieke hengel ondervinding gesorg.

Met ’n kombinasie van sardyn, maarsbanker en tjokka vir aas, was Potgieter vasberade om die een vis wat nog altyd weg gekom het, aan wal te bring. “Ek was besig om die vis in te katrol en kon voel hy was groot. Skielik was daar ’n geweldige geruk en pluk aan die lyn. Ek kon egter voel daar was nog steeds iets aan my lyn en het maar gedwee voortgegaan om dit in te katrol,” vertel Chrisjan.

Volgens hom het hy het eers onraad vermoed toe dit wat van die oorspronlike vis oorgebly het, aan sy hoek in die vlakwater te voorskyn gekom het. Dit het toe dudelik geword dat ’n haai hom self gehelp het en die vis aan Chrisjan se lyn bygekom het terwyl die hengelaar gespook het om sy vangs aan wal te bring.

“Ek was eintlik hartseer want ek hengel nou al lank en wou nog altyd ’n kabeljou wat meer as 16kg weeg vang. Daardie haai kon wragtag ’n kleiner vis gekies het. Jy kan mos maar niks doen wanneer so iets met jou gebeur nie. Ek het die halwe vis maar uitgehaal en in my boks gaan sit. Die ander hengelaars rondom my het met die verloop van tyd nader gestaan om te kom kyk. Dit was baie eienaardig.”

Die vis se kop wys dat dit ’n besonderse groot kabeljou was voordat meneer haai sy hap gevat het. Dit wat oorgebly het is onder die werkers by Skubbebaar op Hentiensbaai uitgedeel.

“Hulle het gesê hulle gaan sop daarvan maak en het behoorlik gestry oor wie die vis kry,” vertel Chrisjan met ’n glimlag.
