According to the regional director of education in Erongo, Enfrieda Stephanus, there are still 263 grade one learners who have not been placed in the Walvis Bay circuit for this academic year.
However, Stephanus added that the number of learners without a place at the harbour town had been higher. “Initially in Walvis Bay, over 400 learners needed space.”
In the meantime, some learner had been accommodated, but there is no more space for those remaining.
Stephanus said that all grade 1 learners in the Swakopmund and Omaruru circuits have been placed. However, the need remains for more classrooms to be built in the region during this financial year.
“There is a backlog of about 16 classrooms in the region. These have been budget for. But we actually need still more classrooms,” she said.
The 2020/2021 financial year ends on 31 March. Only then will the minister of finance, Iipumbu Shiimi, deliver his annual budget for the coming financial year and reveal how much money every ministry will receive.
Stephanus said that the schools’ athletics season is not a priority at the moment. “I am more worried about schools starting. At this stage we are all concerned with education and will deal with all sports matters later,” she said.
In conclusion she said that the delay in the completion of hostels in the Omaruru circuit is an urgent concern faced by the education directorate in the region.
