Trevino Forbes; Mayor; “… we need to step up our precautionary measures and do better.”
Walvis Bay mayor Trevino Forbes cautioned residents of the town to step up prevention measures against Covid-19.
He made the statement at an ordinary council meeting held on Tuesday afternoon.
“The whole nation has been watching with concern as the Covid-19 infection rate has been increasing at an alarming rate across the country, with Walvis Bay being no exception.”
The mayor said that he does not know if what is happening is due to negligence from the side of residents.
“What I do know is, we need to step up our precautionary measures and do better. Keeping this virus contained should be the responsibility of each and every resident and not just the ministry of health.”
Forbes, who has recovered from the virus, encouraged residents who qualify to get the vaccine to do so as soon as possible.
“Covid-19 does not discriminate, and it affects all of us in a broad sense as it wreaks havoc in our social and economic lives. I was diagnosed with Covid-19 four weeks ago and only returned to office last Monday. I am now waiting for my 14 days to lapse before I am eligible to get vaccinated.”
The mayor appealed to individuals, companies or government entities to engage with his office when organising activities of an official nature.
He implored business communities to contact his office to assist the fishermen while a final confirmation of employment is waited for from Hangana Seafood.
“We aware of the plight of these fishermen. The fact that they have been in this situation for so long, unable to provide for their families due to the greediness of a few, leaves one emotionally drained.”
Forbes said that he was grateful to the odd fishing company that has absorbed a great number of these fishermen into their structures.
“We are still hopeful that the nearly 300 that are still destitute can also be accommodated. I commend the fishermen for their patience and orderly behaviour during these trying times.”
