Sewe jaar gelede het Huipie van Wyk se lewe onherroeplik verander toe haar jongste dogter, Elandri, gebore is.

Elandri ly aan serebrale verlamming – ’n toestand wat ’n lewensveranderende impak op Huipe en haar gesin se lewens gehad het.

Huipie vertel dat sy en haar man Schalk se huwelik op die rotse was na Elandri se diagnose. “Ons het albei op verskillende maniere uitmekaar beweeg in die eerste jaar na Elandri se diagnose. Maar ons moes saam besluit dat Elandri se nalatenskap nie ’n egskeiding sou wees nie. Wanneer jou kind iets soos serebrale verlamming het, word haar nalatenskap aan jou oorgelaat. Die kind kan nie besluit wat hulle nalatenskap sal wees nie en ek het geweier dat dit haar nalatenskap sou wees.”

Die egpaar het berading ontvang en is hul huwelik versterk sodat hulle saam kon omsien na die grootmaak van Elandri en hul ander twee dogters.

Huipie meen Elandri se gesondheidsorge juis haar oudste dogter ’n unieke uitkyk op die lewe gegee het. “My dogter is meer sensitief teenoor aksies as woorde. Sy sal byvoorbeeld ’n klasmaat wat ander boelie opsom deur te sê dat sy baie seer in haar het en dus ander afknou. Sy verstaan mense anders.”

Huipie sê Elandri se diagnose pla hul gesin glad nie. “Hoe sy is, is vir ons normaal. Sy is vir ons gegee,” sê sy.

Die ma van drie meen juis Elandri haar ouer susters se gelukbringer is. “Waar ook al ons gaan, of dit langs ’n hokkiebaan of ’n atletiekbyeenkoms is, Elandri is altyd daar om haar susters te ondersteun,” sê sy.

Huipie sê Elandri het haar ook verander. “Ek was ’n boekhouer voor Elandri in ons lewens gekom het.

Vandag is Huipie die direkteur van Side by Side Early Intervention Center wat ander ma’s soos haarself help om hul kinders beter te kan verstaan en te versorg.

Huipie het in 2016 opleiding by Side by Side ontvang en in 2017 het die direkteur van die sentrum, Sandra Hallwick, haar gevra om oor te neem.
