Low water levels affecting health

Swakoppoort dam at 5%

12 February 2020 | Local News

The Karibib municipality has sent out an official warning about its water supply.

In a media statement, the municipality said that the low levels of the Swakoppoort dam is causing higher concentrations of organic and inorganic material in the water.

All water is purified at the Caribbean water purification plant, but the higher toxin concentration in the water appears to be putting extra pressure on the plant.

This water is said to be distributed to Caribbean village, Otjimbingwe settlement and surrounding areas and residents of affected areas are advised to boil all water before consumption.

The municipality cited an observed breakthrough of micro-organisms and chemicals as an explanation for a recent rise in stomach-related issues residents in the area have been experiencing.

There are plans underway to improve water quality, with interventions expected to be in place by the end of the month.

“We urge the people of Caribbean to be patient with the ongoing efforts; as well as to note that the use of water in the city is not life-threatening,” reads the statement.
