Leonard Martin completes the Munga
Pedal to the metal
Walvis Bay • [email protected] Well-known sportsman from the coast Leonard “Ironman” Martin completed the 2020 Munga mountain bike race in neighbouring South Africa last weekend.
Martin, who is a Renshi at the Goju-Kai karate dojo in Walvis Bay, said that the long-distance cycling event was the toughest he has ever raced.
“To date, it was my hardest race, but also my preparation for the Munga was spot on,” Martin said on his Facebook page.
The fitness fanatic was among over 100 cyclists in the race covering 1124km from Bloemfontein to the Doolhof wine estate in the Cape Winelands.
He also said that conditions during the race were not favourable.
“It was hot, windy. There were sandy roads, bad jeep tracks, mountains, corrugated roads, you name it - it was there. As the race goes on, you start to realize it is not going to get easier, you must adapt and make the best of it.”
According to him there were contrasting temperatures and numerous farm gates to pass through.
“The wind was howling at 50km/h and the temperatures varied from 4 to 48 degrees. Three things needed to work together. That was mind over matter, mind over body and mind over soul. Mind, body and soul must unite, the key elements to your success for the Munga.”
Martin said he will definitely do the race again.
“The best feeling of my life was to see my son Brandon-Lee waiting for me at the finish line. This was the cherry on the cake. He supported me as a backup on my long training rides and during the Munga.”
He regularly takes part in the Nedbank Desert Dash and is renowned for his achievements as a karate athlete on the international stage.
