Walvis Bay Road Runners wil die jaar op ’n vinnige pas afskop met die klub se eie en eerste byeenkoms vir hardlopers langs die kus.

Die klub, wat by Athletics Namibia geregistreer is en uit sowat 45 lede bestaan, is kliphard besig om die Flamingo Run te reël wat Saterdag (25 Januarie) plaasvind.

Klublid Michelle Wilson sê Namibiese atletiekklubs word aangemoedig om hul eie geleenthede te skep en aan te bied.

“Ons klub bestaan uit drawwers wat oor verskillende afstande deelneem. Ons kon tot dusver nog nie ons eie byeenkoms aanbied nie en is dus baie opgewonde om dit uiteindelik te kan doen. Ons wil die wedloop laat groei en dit jaarliks hou.”

Langasems kan oor 5 km,10 km of 21,1 km deelneem. Volgens Wilson is dit ook goeie voorbereiding vir atlete wat aan die Rössing marathon op 18 Februarie gaan deelneem.

Registrasie vir die Flamingo Run sluit Woensdag middernag, maar laat inskrywings kan nog Vrydag tussen 16:00 en 19:00 by die wegspringplek by die tennisklub by die lagune gedoen word.

Deelnemers aan die 21 km-wedloop spring Saterdag om 07:00 weg waarna die 10 km (07:15) en die 5 km deelnemers (07:30) se wedlope begin.

Almal volg dieselfde roete langs die lagune in die rigting van die soutpanne en daar is vyf waterpunte langs die pad. Die prysuitdeling word om 10:00 gehou waar medaljes uitgedeel word vir almal wat die resies voltooi.

Die wenners in die 21.1 km en 10 km afdelings steek elkeen N$500 in die sak en die eerste hardloper oor die wenstreep in die 5 km-kategorie wen N$200. Die naaswenners en derde plek wenners gaan word beloon.

Volgens Wilson verwag hulle sowat 150 deelnemers.

“Een van die kus se voorste langafstand atlete, Erich Goeieman, het gesê hy gaan deelneem en daar word ook ’n hele paar ander benkende gesigte verwag. Die inkomste uit die inskrywingsgeld gaan gebruik word vir die medaljes en die res gaan vir die klub,” het Wilson gesê.
