Elf jong karateka het elkeen ’n swartbeld ontvang tydens ’n sermonie van die Shotokan Karate Akademie Internasionaal (SKAI).

Volgens sensei Willem Burger, SKAI se hoofinstrukteur, het die karateka almal ’n minimum van vyf jaar se ondervinding in die Shotokan karatestyl en moes hulle ’n uitmergelende gradering deurgaan om hul swartbelde te verdien.

“Die karateka is gradeer op dinge soos kundigheid in basiese tegniek, kundigheid in forms, kundigheid in veg, fiksheid, etiket en prosedure, netheid, gesindheid, oogposisies, konsentrasie en selfbeheersing,” het Burger verduidelik.

Diegene wat hoopvol was vir ’n Shodan (eerste graad swartbelt), Nidan (tweede graad swartbelt) of Sandan (derde graad swartbelt) is reeds in November verlede jaar beproef, maar kon weens die Covid-19-inperkings nie hul prestasies vier nie.

André Oberholster is die enigste van die 11 karateka wat die hoogste eer – ’n sandan – ontvang het. Hy het 22 jaar lank geswoeg vir dié eer.

“Dit was moeilik om kalm te bly en die proses te vertrou. As karateka, wil jy altyd dadelik die beste wees, so dit verg baie om rustig te bly,” sê hy.

Oberholster vertel dat hy die vyf beginsels naamlik goeie karakter, getrouheid, strewe (endeavour), die weerhouding van geweld, en respek van karate as sy lewensleuse aanvaar het.

“Respek is die grootste geskenk wat jy vir iemand kan gee,” sê die 26-jarige wat sy graad in sportwetenskap by die Universiteit van Pretoria verwerf het.

Die 17-jarige Francois Smit, wat shodan ontvang het, sê dat hy nege jaar gelede karate begin het om boelies by die skool af te weer.

“Ek het gesien hoe, nie net ek nie, maar my vriendinne geboelie word en ek kon dit nie daar laat nie,” het hy verduidelik.
