Hongersnood se einde in sig

Die munisipaliteit van Swakopmund het onlangs Wêreldvoedseldag her­denk met die oorhandiging van kos aan die Tears Of Hope-weeshuis, Ubuntu Day Care en Huisen-sopkombuis.

Mnr. Clive Lawrence, die algemene gesondheidsbestuurder van die Swakopmund-munisipaliteit, het gesê die inisiatief is moontlik gemaak deur munisipale personeel. Hy sê daar is omtrent 'n week gelede tydens 'n personeelvergadering oor die inisiatief gesels en daarna is gevra dat elke munisipale werknemer minstens een kositem skenk.

“Ons wou meer gedoen het, maar dit was kort kennisgewing. Ons hoop om dit weer te doen en dat dit dan groter en beter sal wees.”

Die adjunkburgemeester, me. Maria Elago, het in haar toespraak by die drie instansies wat by die skenking gebaat het, gesê dat 150 lande elke jaar aan Wêreldvoedseldag deelneem.

Vanjaar was die eerste keer dat Swakopmund deelgeneem het.

“Swakopmund sal aanhou om by te dra totdat hongersnood op die dorp uitgewis is,” het Elago gesê.

Vanjaar se tema was “Voedingryke kos vir almal, oral” en die verrig­tinge is deel van die Verenigde Nasies (VN) se tweede doelwit vir volhoubare ontwikkeling, naamlik om hongersnood uit te wis.

Lawrence meen die skenkings is 'n teken van die munisipaliteit se deernis.

Hy meen ook dat Wêreldvoedsel­dag 'n platform is wat gebruik kan word om individue op te voed aangaande koshigiëne, groentetuine en selfonderhoud deur ­middel daarvan, asook fokus op verval­datums van kositems.

Lawrence het ook gewys na die moontlikheid van 'n voedselbank op Swakopmund.

“Daar sal natuur­lik riglyne, kriteria en protokol wees, maar ons het reeds 200 tot 300 mense identifiseer wat by 'n voedselbank sal baat.”

Hy het gesê die verrigtinge rondom vanjaarse Wêreldvoedseldag was net 'n “klein stap” en dat die gemeenskap se insette baie belangrik is. “Dis is in eenheid waar sukses lê en onthou, vele hande maak ligte werk.”
