Henties Bay road claims two lives
The police are investigating cases of culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving.
According to the Erongo police regional commander for community affairs, inspector Ileni Shapumba, the accident occurred at around 06:30.
“It is alleged that a side-on collusion occurred between two motor vehicles. A white Toyota, with the driver and a passenger, was allegedly travelling from Uis towards Henties Bay, while the driver of a white Iveco was travelling alone from Henties Bay towards Terrace Bay at the time of the accident. The driver of the Toyota alledgedly failed to comply with the regulatory road signs and did not stop at the T-junction. As a result, the Toyota hit the Iveco which was travelling on the straight road.”
The passenger in the Toyota succumbed to his injuries on the spot and the driver succumbed to injuries at Swakopmund Cottage Hospital.
“The driver of the Iveco escaped the accident without any injuries and his condition is described as stable,” said Shapumba.
The deceased were identified as Josephat Nakale and Jaakly Alfredo, both Namibians. Their next of kin have been informed.
Life Link Emergency Rescue Services reported that they were called out along with the Henties Bay fire and rescue services to a scene of a fatal accident early Friday morning at the Uis road turn off.
“A double cab collided with a haulage truck in poor visibility. Sadly, one person passed away at the scene, whilst a second person was extricated by the fire service using hydraulic rescue tools.”
The person that was extricated was taken to hospital by ambulance but passed away half an hour after his arrival at the hospital.
Another person was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
