Hawedorp herdenk herintegrasie

Ná Namibie se onafhanklikwording op 21 Maart 1990 het Walvisbaai op 1 Maart 1994 weer amptelik deel van die land geword.

Die herintegrasie van die kusdorp is die naweek behoorlik gevier. Die verrigtinge het Saterdag met 'n optog van die Mautamene-brandweerstasie na die Kuisebmond-stadion afgeskop. Oud en jonk, asook leerlinge van die Sekondêre Skool Kuisebmond, Sekondêre Skool De Duine, Primêre Skool Narraville en Sekondêre Skool Duneside het daaraan deelgeneem.

Streekraadslid Jusso Kambueshe het namens Namibië se regterpresident Petrus Damaseb die hooftoespraak gelewer. Damaseb het klem gelê op die belangrike rol wat die oudpolitikus wyle Nathaniel Maxulili gespeel het om Namibiese besit van Walvisbaai van die Suid-Afrikaanse regering te herwin.

“Toe Namibië in 1990 sy onafhanklikheid gekry het, was Walvisbaai en die aflandige eilande steeds deel van Suid-Afrika. Dit het Maxulili omgekrap en hy het dit in die parlement duidelik gestel dat hy nie sou rus voordat die Namibiese vlag in die dorp gehys word nie. Ek is baie seker hy glimlag vandag daar waar hy langs sy Meester sit.”

Damaseb het gesê dit was nie maklik om in dieselfde vertrek saam met onderhandelaars soos wyle Pik Botha, die buurland se destydse minister van buitelandse sake, te wees nie.

“Om diplomate soos wyle Theo-Ben Gurirab langs jou te hê, het dit wel makliker gemaak.”

Hy het ook ‘n beroep op die jeug gedoen om die beheer te neem in die stryd vir ekonomiese onafhanklikheid.

“Ons voorvaders het hul lewe opgeoffer om vir politieke onafhanklikheid te veg, maar dit beteken niks sonder ekonomiese bevryding nie.”

Die burgemeester van Walvisbaai, mnr. Immanuel Wilfred, het gesê die hawedorp het 'n ryk geskiedenis wat voortspruit uit die vestiging van die eerste mense op die dorp.

“Dit sluit inheemse mense tot diegene wat ons gekoloniseer het in. Ons weet dat ons inheemse bevolking, met ander woorde die voorvaders van die Topnaars, al in die veertiende eeu langs die Namibiese kus of in die omgewing van Walvisbaai-omgewing gewoon het. Die eerste Westerse ontdekkers het 'n eeu later aangekom, en die eerste amptelike koloniseerders was drie eeue later hier.”

Wilfred het gesê dit is moeilik is om 'n amptelike geboortedatum van Walvisbaai te bepaal. Hy het gesê dit sou wel ongetwyfeld gepas wees om die inheemse Namibiërs daarvoor te vereer. “Die hergeboorte van Walvisbaai in 1994 is dus 'n genadige kompromie.”

Wilfred het gesê alhoewel Walvisbaai deur onder meer begrotingsprobleme belemmer word, het dit nie die groei van die dorp ingeperk nie. Hy het ook sy dank uitgespreek teenoor elkeen wat die vieringe 'n sukses gemaak het.

Drie oudburgemeesters van Walvisbaai, mnre. Manuel de Castro, King Mandume Muatunga en Uilika Nambahu, het ook die vieringe bygewoon.

Die geleentheid is afgesluit met optredes in die Kuisebmond-stadion deur bekroonde kunstenaars soos Top Cheri, Sally Boss Madam, Tswasiz en Sunny Boy.
