Grumpy’s Fishing Report

February is truly one of the top fishing months along our beautiful coastline.
The first interclub competition was also held at the Winston wreck area where five tons of sharks were caught. Every single shark is measured and safely released. There were about 200 anglers that competed against each other.
What was surprising is the fact that an astonishing 30 spearnose skates were also caught. These spikey critters have rather sharp teeth which makes them a formidable foe when handling them. A thick cloth is used to pull them onto the beach by their pointed nose.
Most sharks were spotted gulley sharks and the rest consisted of spikey dogfish, cowsharks and bronze whalers.
A decent amount of smooth hound sharks were also caught.
This specific weekend was amazing as the day before the competition, all anglers that fished in the Maketus area got stuck into huge kob. Andy Bachran, a junior angler from Atlantic Angling Club, caught his personal best kob of 20kg.
The fish landed that day were exceptionally big, with most fish being way over the 10kg mark. Young and old had a great time catching these strong fighters. The immediate areas around Maketus also produced some fish, but at a slightly slower rate.
February being a super fishing month, the thresher sharks are making their appearance at Langstrand. A thresher shark is a very colourful shark with a purple colour along the top side. It has an amazingly long tail to stun its prey. They are acrobatic fighters and once hooked they jump out of the water trying to break free.
Rodney Davies tried his luck and he got stuck into a huge thresher shark. He used mackerel as bait and it took him approximately 30 minutes to land. That’s one super fish, Rodney!
Closer to Swakopmund, at Mile 14, was probably the best fishing area for the week. The Bredenhann family of Krugerdorp were fishing in the Mile 14 area at high tide.
Father Willem caught his big kob on white mussel, while the Coralie used sardine and she got stuck into a big shad. She also managed to catch a decent kob and barbel on one cast. We call that feat a “banana”. Well played Coralie! All their fish were released to fight another day.
