Grumpy’s Fishing Report
22 June 2021 | Fishing
Canopy and Maketu’s were the pick of the week. Wow, so many big galjoen and steenbras were caught and brought to shore, some in excess of 15kg. Blacktail were also in the mix. The blacktail were also massive and some reports came in mentioning fish over 44cm. That’s some decent fish for sure.
Andy Arnoster, Swakopmund resident, went to canopy specifically a little north of canopy and fished right in front of the water tank. There they got stuck into plenty of steenbras with their biggest being 4kg. Arnoster and his angling partner both managed to catch their allocated 10 fish. But not to be outdone, Xavier Mouton tried his luck in the totally opposite direction. Being a Walvis Bay resident, he tried his luck at Paaltjies. He went fishing there just before sunset and managed to catch two galjoen with one cast. This lucky fortunate event is called a banana. Well done Xavier. Some kob and steenbras were also caught during the week at Paaltjies.
The conditions remain fairly flat for the week with some decent catches expected. Closer to Swakopmund the galjoen have been biting but the size wasn’t anything to write home about. A lot of the fish caught were rather undersize and had to be put back to grow a bit bigger. That seemed to be the trend right up to the Zeila wreck. I am sure this will change quickly and the bigger botterkoppe will be back.
For the shark anglers it been a bit quieter with the odd spotted gulley shark making an appearance. The bronze whalers should be back in no time though. Until next time, tight lines!
