Good rainfall countrywide

Flood warnings due to efundja

Namibia hasn’t experienced a good rain season like this in many years. Thanks to a tropical occurrence, record high rains were recorded in the north of the country at the weekend, with more than 150mm reported in some areas.

In some towns, including Oshakati and Oshikango, houses and shops were flooded.

In the meantime, the ministry of water affairs, agriculture and forestry’s hydrological service has warned of flooding, saying that the so-called efundja can be expected.

“In the Omusati, Oshana, Ohangwena, Kavango West and Kavango East regions, emergency plans must be initiated before flooding,” the service said in a statement, adding that “communities living in flood-prone areas must take precautionary measures”.

In addition, the levels of all rivers continue to rise, especially the Okavango. At Rundu the level was 7.3m on Friday – much higher than in the past four years.

Many Namibians continue to share their rain reports on social media platforms with much pleasure: 60mm was measured in Windhoek on Friday; up to 50mm at Omaruru and 45mm in the Hochfeld area. Good rainfall was also reported at Gobabis in the east.

According to the weather network SASSCAL, 73.5mm was measured at the Okomumbonde station on Saturday, 67.5mm at Waterberg and 59mm at Sandveld.

A warning from the Namibian Weather Service about severe storms in the north and the Khomas and Omaheke regions remain in place.

Thanks to the good rainfall, all reservoirs have had a good inflow, with NamWater warning residents below the Von Bach Dam on Friday evening that the sluices could be opened, which occurred on Sunday night.

In the meantime, many rivers continue to carry water. The Kuiseb is reported to have almost reached Rooibank near Walvis Bay; the Gaub made it to the pass bearing the same name; and by yesterday the Omaruru has been running continuously for ten days. The dry Omdel dam upstream from Henties Bay received its first water in many years.

According to reports, the Fish River is also carrying “a lot of water”, feeding the Hardap and Neckartal dams.

However, in spite of good rains received in many parts of the country, some areas in the west and south of Namibia haven’t received particularly good showers.
