’n Film om te onthou

Ek is nie ’n aanhanger van kortfilms nie. Die enigste rede hoekom ek bereid is om my tyd daarmee te mors is juis omdat dit kort is. Maar ’n reël sonder ’n uitsondering is ’n uitsondering tot die reël.

Toe kom ek my uitsondering teë: Baxu and The Giants.

Die Wetenskaplike Vereniging van Swakopmund (SSS) het onlangs dié kortfilm vertoon. Die saal was stampvol en ek glo almal daar sal nie hierdie kortfilm gou vergeet nie.

Ek beslis nie.

Dit handel oor ’n jong meisie in die Namibiese platteland wat droom van ’n renoster wat met haar praat. Haar naam is !Khubaxu (Baxu), wat “ek kom van die grond” beteken.

Baxu se karakter is wys verby haar jare en sien dinge raak wat ’n 9-jarige meisie nie gewoonlik sou raaksien nie. Sy het deernis, onderskeidingsvermoë en lewenskennis wat haar jare vêr vooruit gaan.

Tog bly Baxu ook ’n kind wat ’n mak bokkie in hul kraal wil leer om soos ’n skouhond te spring terwyl sy haar ouboet verafgod.

Die balans tussen kindwees en haar ongewone volwasse wysheid is haarfyn en maak Baxu die beste kinderkarakter wat ek nog gesien het. Kinders is immers nie net kind nie; daar steek ook wysheid in hulle. Die film vang hierdie aspek vir my mooi vas.

My grootste vrees was dat hierdie kortfilm in die sosio-kommentaar lokval sou vasval. Eerder as om eenvoudig tot die gesprek by te dra, raak baie sosio-kommentators ’n narcissus in gesprekke wat hul punt in jou keel probeer afdwing. Baxu and The Giants vermy hierdie lokval susksevol en behou steeds ’n ferm standpunt met die boodskap “moenie renosters stroop nie!”

Deur dié boodskap uit ’n ander oogpunt te benader, vermy die film die cliché. Almal is die protagonis in hul eie lewe en hierdie film kyk na die antagonis vanuit die protagonis se oë.

Die span agter die film het duidelik geweet wat hulle doen.

Die film se identiteit het ’n gemaklike natuurlikheid in teenstelling met baie ander wat jou oordonder met hul ‘eg Namibiese’ boodskap: Van die Republikein in die agtergrond tot die Nammilk joghurtbakkie wat gebruik word om goedtjies in te stoor.

Hoewel dit in ’n tipies Namibiese nedersetting (Tubuses) geskiet is, word dié manier van lewe geensings geromantiseer of gedramatiseer nie. Dit is eerlik, modern maar steeds tradisioneel. Soos dit hoort.

Baxu and The Giants raak ook aan temas soos alkoholisme, kolonialisme, familieliefde en die stereotipering van sukses.

Die humor breek ook op ’n gepaste wyse die erns van die storie. Daar is wel oomblikke wat die kamera verlore raak, maar die storie en wonderlike toneelspel van Camilla Jo-Ann Daries het my só geraak dat ek nie veel omgegee het daaroor nie.

Ek was op die punt om te huil toe ek besef ek sit in ’n saal vol mense. Ek het so erg hoendervleis gekry, dit het my laat bewe.
Dit bring my tot die slotsom. Baxu is sonder twyfel een van die beste films wat die land nóg opgelewer het.
