Gasbottels wen weer

Die Gasbottels is weer as die wenners van die Sparta Touchies-rugbytoernooi gekroon.

Die verdedigende kampioene van die Sparta Touchies-rugbytoernooi, Die Gasbottels, het weereens as wenners uit dié jaar se toernooi getree.

Die Gasbottels het vir G&D Hydraulics ná ekstra tyd in die finaal verslaan. Dit was 'n harde wedstryd met Ashton Mukwiilongo wat eindelik daarin kon slaag om die wendrie te druk.

Gums Enterprises het in die derde plek geëindig en Otji's, 'n span wat ook die enigste vrouespeler Gabriella Jahs (22) as spanlid gehad het, het vierde geëindig.

Vanjaar is dié gesogte toernooi, wat jaarliks op Hentiesbaai plaasvind, deur die Sparta-rugbyklub op Walvisbaai aangebied weens die Covid-19-pandemie.

Die toernooi het vroeg Saterdagoggend afgeskop met tien rugbyspanne, insluitend Die Gasbottels, Sparta, G&D Hydraulics, Souties, Otji's, Rowwe Bliksems, Die Ouens, Slick Rick's, Gums Enterprises en Young Ones.

Van die bekende spelers in aksie was die ­Namibiese skrumskakel Damian Stevens, heelagters Chad Plato en sy broer ­Aurelio, wat die land as kaptein van die sewesspan verteenwoordig het. Chad het namens die wenspan gepraat en vertel dit is die derde keer wat Die Gasbottels die toernooi wen.

“Dit is altyd wonderlik om die dag te geniet saam met ander talentvolle spelers. Ons het 'n moeilike jaar gehad en die bietjie rugby het baie verligting gebring.”

Hy het ook die hoop uitgespreek dat Covid-19 spelers kans sal gee om weer rugby te speel.

Hy het ook jonger rugbyspelers aangemoedig en gesê hulle moet hul eie pad vorentoe bepaal.

“Moenie laat ­enigiemand jou toekoms vir jou bepaal nie. Hou moed en moet nooit opgee nie.”

Mukwiilongo het vertel dit was lekker om deur te breek en die wendrie vir sy span te druk.

Dit is die derde keer wat hy saam met Die Gasbottels speel.

“Die opponente was definitief hul sout werd en het dit nie vir ons maklik gemaak nie. Ek het soveel nuwe dinge geleer by die ander spelers. Dit was baie lekker om weer te speel ná die jaar wat daar geen wedstryde of enige toernooie was nie. ”

Mej. Touchies

Net na die toernooi het die mooiste dames van die toer­nooi erkenning gekry. Sewe meisies het deelgeneem en hul spanne in die Mej. Touchies-kompetisie verteenwoordig.

Megan Schiefer (Souties) is as Mej. Touchies gekroon, haar eerste prinses is Janice Kabooy (Otji's) en die tweede prinses is Cassandra ­Michel (Sparta).

Die ander deelnemers was Jamy-Lee Louw (Gums Enterprises), Azaria Klassen (Die Rowwe Bliksems), Pamela Lowrens (Sparta) en Lizaria Pretorius (Gasbottels).

Die beoordelaars was Bernadette de Beer, Casey Lewis en Jacquie Fourie.
