Friday the Giddy; Rapper; “I am super exciting about the win because it gave me exposure.”
Lyricists set the stage alight during the fifth instalment of Rap Battle Conversations held under the theme “Vernac” at Desert Tavern in Swakopmund recently.
The initiative was founded by Melissa “Scarlet Gray” Müller. She started Rap Battle Conversations with the aim of bringing story telling alive through self-introspection. The movement was also initiated to keep the art of lyricism - fun, adventurous and educational.
Hip Hop lovers witnessed epic performances by Rivaldo “Space” van den Heever, Eldino “Gemini” Madjiet, Nicky “Krazy” Karihinga, Gideon “Friday the Giddy” Kazondandona and the host Scarlet Gray. The judges included Mark Westcoast as well as multi-award nominated Nga-I who also performed his smash hit “Kozondundu”. The event concluded with emcees stepping onto the stage and freestyling freshly conjured lyrics.
Gideon “Friday the Giddy” Kazondandona (25) was crowned as the winner of the battle with Krazy emerging as the runner up. Another local rapper, Phillip “The Unexpected” Raj was selected as the third-placed rapper. Friday the Giddy won a trophy as well as a t-shirt sponsored by 064 All Day. He also pocketed a haircut at Nevaeh Barbershop and a collaboration with the king of Ovitrap, Nga-I. The rapper described the victory as momentous. “I am super exciting about the win because it gave me exposure. The opportunity also enhanced my level of confidence. I really hope that there will be more shows like this at the coast,” he said. Krazy and The Unexpected won trophies, free haircuts and will also collaborate with Nga-I.
Hip hop lover, Julia Shihepo, who attended the show for the first time, said that she thoroughly enjoyed the event. “I was sceptical at first because I thought it was only for lyrics. I enjoyed the performances by the artists.”
The organiser Scarlet Gray, is already planning the sixth edition of the event with a set of prominent players in the hip hop game expected to appear as judges. The first Rap Battle Conversations was held in Windhoek in 2020 with the next four events taking place in Swakopmund. Scarlet Gray can be contacted on 081 409 0172 for more information.
