Two suspects were arrested and are expected to make their first court appearance today in the Walvis Bay magistrate’s court on charges of fraud and theft under false pretences.
Regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, said that the suspects unlawfully and intentionally defrauded the owner of Inter Cargo Shipping of N$600 000 between September 2019 and January 2020.
“The money was deposited by the complainant, who currently resides in Zambia, into the company's account for purchasing chicken which was supposed to be transported to Zambia as per agreement. The suspects withdrew the money and used it for personal needs and failed to deliver the chicken,” he said.
Two suspects were also arrested in the DRC suburb in Swakopmund on Friday for being in possession of 14 ballies of cannabis and 14 quarters of mandrax tablets valued at N$500. The suspects, Leonard Jagger (45) and Joseph Swartbooi (25), made their first appearance on Friday.
On Saturday, two women were arrested in Henties Bay after they were found in possession of two full, five half and five quarter mandrax tablets along with a ballie of cannabis valued at N$700. They are expected to make their first court appearance in Swakopmund today (Monday).
Another suicide was reported in Walvis Bay last Wednesday. According to Iikuyu, Christiaan Steenkamp (45) was found on the kitchen floor of his home by his two sons. There was foam coming out of his mouth with an unknown substance found next to him.
“It is suspected to be poison. A sample of the substance was sent to a laboratory for testing. There was no suicide note and no foul play is suspected.”
This is the third suicide in a space of one week in Walvis Bay.
