Five new Covid cases for Erongo

The minister of health and social services Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced 112 new cases, 31 recoveries and one Covid-19 death.

Shangula said that 1 037 results were received and that of the new cases, 90 are males and 22 are females with ages ranging from 13 to 63-years-old.

The confirmed cases are distributed in Oshakati (69), Opuwo (13), Windhoek (8), Omuthiya (5), Onandjokwe (2), Swakopmund (3), Walvis Bay (2), Rundu (2), Rehoboth (1), Mariental (1), Otjiwarongo (1), Okahandja (), Karasburg (1), Lüderitz (1), Eenhana (1) and Engela (1).

The minister explained that the Oshakati cases include 15 inmates from Oluno Correctional Facility who are all contacts of confirmed cases, and 53 cases from Oshakati Senior Secondary School.

The Opuwo cases include five inmates from Opuwo holding cells and six police officers. The five Omuthiya cases are all inmates in the holding cells.

“The statistics above underscore the significance of enclosures in the transmission of Covid-19,” the minister emphasised.

Shangula also announced 31 new recoveries in the Khomas (14), Otjozondjupa (10), Erongo (5) and //Kharas (2) regions.

Of the active cases, one patient is in a severe condition and four are in critical condition. In the Erongo region, two patients are in critical condition, while in the Khomas region, one patient is severely sick while two others are critically sick.

The minister also announced one Covid-19 death involving a 76-year-old woman from Gobabis who had multiple comorbidities.
She presented to a local health facility on 11 October 2020 with symptoms consistent with Covid-19.

The patient was admitted in a severe state on the day of presentation and was swabbed for Covid-19. The result returned positive. She passed away on 12 October.

“It is reported that the deceased attended two funerals before she fell sick. We are once again reminding people to avoid public gatherings including funerals. I have said on more than one occasion that burials should not give rise to more burials,” reiterated the minister.
