Dr Kalumbi Shangula; Minister of health; “…six local laboratories test for Covid-19 with a combined capacity of 2 400 tests per day.”

Namibia recorded 56 new Covid-19 cases, 72 recoveries and one Covid-19 related death.

The minister of health and social services Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced this, adding that 925 results were received from the laboratories.

Of the newly reported cases, 32 are female and 24 are male; the youngest is one-year-old and the oldest is 68.

The confirmed cases are distributed as follows: Windhoek (39), Swakopmund (4), Walvis Bay (2), Mariental (6), Keetmanshoop (1), Okahandja (1), Eenhana (1), Tsumeb (1) and Oshakati (1).

The minister also said that the low number of tests was due to the slow effort being made to manage the backlog.

“The backlog at the laboratories, specifically at NIP, had been cleared. The testing capacity has increased significantly, therefore we are strategizing to expand the targeted testing moving forward. We have made tremendous progress in building local capacity for testing for Covid-19.”

The minister said that Namibia now has six local laboratories that test for Covid-19, with a combined capacity of 2 400 tests per day.

“We have cleared the backlog of tests. Going forward, tests results will be available within 24 to 48 hours. This will go a long way in alleviating the inconvenience associated with the long wait for the results to become available.”

The minister further announced 72 recoveries. The most of these (57) are from the Khomas region with 5 recoveries each recorded in the Omaheke and Omusati regions and 6 in the //Kharas region.

Of the active cases, 16 are in serious or in critical condition. In the Erongo region one patient is serious and three are critical.
In the Khomas region, five are seriously ill while seven patients are in a critical condition.

The minister also announced one Covid-19 death which occurred in Windhoek.

“The patient had multiple comorbidities. He presented to a local health facility on 9 September 2020 with a medical complaint. The patient was admitted to the ward and swabbed for Covid-19. His condition deteriorated and he passed away on 16 September 2020. The Covid-19 result returned positive. This is classified as a Covid-19 related death.
