Dr Esther Muinjangue; Deputy minister of health; “We should be vigilant, as more learners are starting school…”

The deputy minister of health and social services Dr Eshter Muinjangue announced 85 new Covid-19 cases, 64 recoveries and one Covid-19 death.

Muinjangue said that 963 test results were received from the laboratories, of which 52 of the newly reported cases are male and 33 are female. The youngest patient is four-years-and the oldest is 69.

The confirmed cases are distributed as follows: Windhoek (37), Oshakati (12), Onandjokwe (12), Rehoboth (7), Mariental (4), Walvis Bay (5), Swakopmund (4), Usakos (1), Okahandja (2) and Rundu (1).

A Covid-19 related death involving a man (72) from Swakopmund was also recorded. He had multiple co-morbidities. He presented at a local health facility on 14 September 2020 with symptoms consistent with Covid-19. The patient was swabbed on admission. His condition deteriorated and he passed away on 19 September 2020.

Muinjangue said that among the 12 cases reported from Onandjokwe in the Oshikoto region, 11 are learners from the same school.

“It is no surprise to record many cases from the same school because transmission in a closed setting flare quickly. We should be vigilant, as more learners are starting school. As per ministry of education protocol, learners should be closely monitored and those who are not feeling well should stay home and seek medical services timely.”

The deputy minister also announced 64 new recoveries of which 35 are from the Khomas region and the rest from Erongo (21), //Kharas (4) and Omaheke (4) regions.

Of the active cases, 14 are in a serious to critical conditions. In the Erongo region, four patients are in a critical condition. In the Khomas region, three are in a serious condition and five are critical. Two patients in the Oshana region are in a serious condition.
