Swakop Uranium (SU) donated food hampers to 40 families from the DRC informal settlement during a ceremony at the offices of the mine in Swakopmund on Christmas Day.
According to SU’s public relations officer Frieda Abraham, the mine saw a need amongst families in the DRC informal settlement.
“Seeing that these families have no food to eat for Christmas, we decided to donate hampers to them, and they were filled with gratitude about the gesture.”
Abraham personally went into one of the most poverty stricken areas in Swakopmund to identify families that are in great need of help so that they could be helped through the initiative.
“Poverty is a huge problem in our community and seeing it is Christmas, we wanted to do something to help,” she said.
Swakop Uranium’s brand slogan that they live by is ‘More than Mining’.
“Standing by what we say, we initiated a corporate social responsibility project that both helps the community and helps us to stay true to what we believe in. We care and we want to show that we care,” Abraham said.
She went on to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.
