Decongestion survey underway

Demand for housing still increasing

Walvis Bay municipality; “Informal housing occupants and homeowners are urged to cooperate and participate with the survey officials…”

The Walvis Bay municipality has warned residents that a list containing names and mobile numbers of persons who have allegedly been allocated erven in Walvis Bay, is fake.

“The public should note that this is fake news and was not issued by the municipality. Council would like to urge those who have received the list, not to forward it to other people”, the municipality said in a statement.

The municipality said it has the sole mandate to produce waiting lists for erven allocation purposes adding that such information is announced through the media by official correspondence.

“Council remains committed to improving conditions for all and wants to assist individuals to acquire their own housing as circumstances permit.”

The municipality acknowledged that the demand for housing has amplified in Walvis Bay.

“People struggle to find adequate shelter has resulted in an exponential increase of backyard shack dwellers. Being aware of this challenge, coupled with efforts to curb the further spread of Covid-19, the municipality started with a decongestion survey, from 2 October until Friday, 9 October 2020.”

The purpose of the survey is to collect data regarding informal housing in Walvis Bay. “Informal housing occupants and homeowners are urged to cooperate and participate with survey officials, while observing safety and health protocols at all times.”

Survey officials are recognized by means of an official identity card and verification can be done by contacting the Housing and Properties Division on 064 201 3254.
