Dr Kalumbi Shangula; Minister of health; “Despite the consistent downward trend in the number of daily confirmed cases, we still need to enhance various prevention measures…”

Health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced 125 new Covid-19 cases, 20 recoveries and another two Covid-19 related deaths on Monday afternoon.

He said that 1 160 results had been received from the various laboratories and that of the new cases, 66 are male and 59 are female, with the youngest aged 10 months and the oldest being 90-years-old.

The two deaths involve a man (61) from Swakopmund who died on 6 September and a man (58) from Windhoek who died on 28 August. Both had known comorbidities and both died in hospital.

The new cases are distributed as follows: Windhoek (81), Walvis Bay (7), Omaruru (4), Swakopmund (2), Usakos (1), Rehoboth (7), Mariental (4), Okahandja (4), Otjiwarongo (4), Keetmanshoop (7), Gobabis (3) and Rundu (1).

“The curve looks encouraging as we have observed a consistent downward trend in the number of daily confirmed cases. Our highest number was recorded on 23 August 2020, which was 316. This should really motivate us to abide by the measures as advised,” said the minister.

Local transmissions

He added that of the 8 810 cumulative cases recorded, 8 719 (99%) are local transmission while 91 (1%) cases were imported.
“Namibia reported imported cases in the first four months of the outbreak from March to June 2020. The low number of imported cases is attributed to the border closing intervention.

“We still need to enhance various prevention measures and engage our communities to contain local transmissions from high burden urban areas like Windhoek, to remote areas where pensioners predominantly reside.”

Namibia also recorded 20 new recoveries: Eight from the Hardap region, seven from Khomas and five from //Kharas.

Shangula said that of the active cases, 21 are in serious to critically ill condition. One is seriously ill in the Erongo region, while five are critical. In the Khomas region, eight are seriously ill, while seven are in critical condition.
