Kaino Matheus; Fashion Designer: "I established myself as a recognised designer and have a strong bond with my clients."

Kaino Ipuleni Matheus (Kim) is taking the world of fashion by storm.

The 28-year-old Matheus, who is a creative executive for Kimatheus Boutique also known as CBK (Couture by Kim), is a fashion designer with a high diploma in visual arts from the University of Namibia.

She creates her own custom made trends and designs for Namibians according to the seasons.

Matheus, who attributes her current success to patience, spoke to Erongo about her endeavors in the fashion industry .

“Being a business woman and if you want to own a successful business you need to be patient . I have established myself as a recognised designer and have a strong bond with my clients.”

Matheus, who works as an assistant manager in her field of study, also has an honours degree in tourism management and geography. Hosting her first fashion show at Monaco Lounge, Windhoek, in 2013 counts among her greatest successes.

Having been a fashion designer for nine years came with various challenges and Matheus described how she overcame them.

“I have learned to set boundaries and to follow my policies with my customers and demands for my service. I am for instance accepting designs from the internet (instead of doing the designing myself) and only do the tailoring. I may have lost some customers because of that.

“I have so much creativity to offer than just receive already made designs. My father told me not to compromise on my principles just because money is involved and I took his advice. This basically means that I do not accept to produce something I know I won't be able to do because of the money. Doing so could lead to an unhappy customer and ruin your reputation. I have learned to say no.”

According to her, anyone who aspires to be a fashion designer needs to be born with talent and must be groomed by professionalism especially in this modern era.

Matheus specialises in clothes making and textiles printing. One of her fashion lines is called ‘Couture by Kim (CBK) - Timeless Time’. She is currently busy with a lingerie/nightie line called ‘CBK- I am a woman’.

“The line is progressing well. If demand declines, I will rejuvenate it."

For the upcoming year, Matheus has made it her goal to own a manufacturing studio and sell her clothing line to big shops like Woolworths, Truworths and Edgars as well as online. She also plans to be a fashion consultant specialist on human style and confidence for women and men who do not know their styles and not confident enough on what to wear.
