Couple nabbed for fraud, money laundering

A couple from Walvis Bay who allegedly defrauded a Swiss man of more than N$1.1 million made their first court appearance.
The suspects Denver (28) and Stacey (22) Cloete were each granted N$5000 bail and their next court appearance was set for 28 August.
The police investigation continues.
According to the national weekly crime report, the couple contacted a Swiss man from Wassergrasse, Switzerland and asked for donations for a hospital operation involving a spinal cushion injury.
The incident occurred between January 2020 and July 2020. The suspects purportedly falsified Welwitschia hospital invoices and received N$1 194 549-50 in cash payments from the donor. Neither of the suspects were ever employed by Welwitschia hospital.
They were both arrested on Friday and were charged with fraud, theft under false pretences and money laundering.
A number of items were recovered which include a red Beetle valued at +-N$90 000, one yellow blaster quad bike valued at N$15 500 and one black HP laptop valued at +-N$16 000.
The suspects’ account which contained N$688,299.35 was frozen after their arrest.
A 34-year old man committed suicide in Mondesa, Swakopmund.
According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, Mathias Moses, a resident of the DRC suburb, asked a neighbour to give him N$5 to buy cigarettes.
The neighbour allegedly refused because she knew that he is not a smoker and he left.
“At around 12:00 the deceased was found hanging in his sleeping room with a leather belt from the roof of the ghetto. He was not experiencing any problems with anyone at home prior to the incident, according to family members. He did not leave a suicide note and his next of kin were informed,” said Iikuyu.
The police is also investigating a case of rape and assault in Uis.
The incident allegedly occurred at the soccer field near Ehafo location in Uis at about 21:00 on Monday.
The suspect (41) and the victim (35) were drinking together at a certain house when the suspect invited the victim to follow him to the soccer field.
“According to the victim the suspect had money and alcohol, that is why he followed him to the soccer field. After a few drinks the suspect demanded sex from the victim. The victim refused and the suspect became angry. He allegedly assaulted, overpowered and had anal sex with him. The victim also sustained serious injuries.”
The victim was taken for medical treatment and was discharged the same day.
The suspect was arrested and will make his first appearance at the Omaruru Magistrates court tomorrow.
A case of rape was also opened in Kuisebmond Walvis Bay on Saturday.
The suspect (21) and the victim (54) were allegedly drinking together at the complainant's residence in Johannes Nakwafila Street in Kuisebmond.
“After a while the victim sent the suspect to buy alcohol and the victim went to rest on her bed and fell asleep. When she woke up the suspect was naked and laying on top of her with his arms around her. She confronted him about his actions and he ran away.”
The suspect was arrested and appears at Walvis Bay Magistrate court tomorrow.
