The Congolese national Gilbert Kalenga (31) will remain in custody after he was denied bail.
This comes after he was arrested in Swakopmund on Tuesday for allegedly being in possession of 27kg of marijuana valued at N$1.35 million.
During his first appearance today (Thursday), state prosecutor Beta Mwiya objected to the granting of bail. She said the charges are of a serious nature and that the accused is a repeat offender.
“He already has a previous conviction as well as a pending matter,” she said, adding that it would not be in the interest of society to grant bail.
Magistrate Conchita Olivier remanded the matter until 23 June for a formal bail application.
Kalenga is represented by lawyer Monty Karuaihe.
He is charged with dealing in cannabis and was arrested during a covert joint operation between the Drug Law Enforcement members of the Otjozondjupa and Erongo regions.
Kalenga’s pending case stems from June 2019 when he was arrested in Mondesa after 1g of cocaine powder valued at N$500 was allegedly found in his possession. This case is scheduled to continue at the Swakopmund magistrate’s court on 12 July 2021.
