The fistball season officially commences with the 2020 Bank Windhoek Open Tournament at the Swakopmund Football Club (SFC) fields on 8 February.

This will be the 50th tournament since 1971 when the league started.

The tourney consists of two categories (A and B), with eight teams contending. They are from Windhoek (Sport Klub Windhoek – SKW 1 and 2, and Cohen Fistball Club – CFC 1, 2 and 3) as well as Swakopmund’s SFC 1 and 2.

The teams are divided into two groups and following the group stages, the four best teams play out for the Category A trophy, while the remaining four teams battle it out for the Category B title.

CFC 1 won the Category Alast year ahead of SKW 1. CFC 2 bagged the third spot. CFC 3 won Category B, followed by SKW 2 and CFC 4.

According to the Fistball Association of Namibia’s media relations officer Helmo Minz, the tournament is crucial as it is the first one for the season.

“All contenders want to take home their first silverware of the year. Most of the teams want to gain experience, build team chemistry and improve their skills. The tournament also prepares players for the rest of the season’s events, especially the league which will kick off in April.”

The event also presents coaches and players with the opportunity to identify weaknesses and strengths, which can be worked on in practice sessions before the league starts.

Registration for the tournament usually ends a week before it takes place. The winners receive a trophy as well as beer, while the second and third-placed teams will also be rewarded with beer.

Namibian fistball is thriving. Internationally, the national fistball team managed to earn a respectable eighth place finish from 18 countries at the 2019 International Fistball Association (IFA) Men’s World Championship which took place in Winterthur, Switzerland, in August last year.

Minz urged all fistball lovers to come out on 8 February and enjoy a fun and action-filled fistball day at the SFC fields.
